As a result of the current COVID-19 outbreak, the SA government has introduced a support package, comprising of several grants, to assist business impacted by the health restrictions put in place from 27 December 2021.
General eligibility criteria:
Must be GST registered
Business is located/operates in South Australia
Must have a valid/active ABN
Australian-wide payroll of less than $10 million in the 2019-20 or 2020-21 financial year.
The below table summaries the available grants, further details for each grant are explained after the table. Please review the government guidelines linked for each grant before applying to ensure that your business is eligible.

Tourism, hospitality & gym grant - automatic payment (December 2021) ($3,000 for employing businesses, $1,000 for non-employing businesses, additional $1,000 if in CBD, additional $7,000 if turnover above $2 million)
This grant is automatically paid to businesses that received the previous COVID-19 Tourism and Hospitality Support Grant. If the business was not eligible for that grant, it will accordingly not be eligible for the automatic payment. However, this will be paid if the business is eligible to apply for the turnover based payment (see next grant).
No application is necessary.
Tourism, hospitality & gym grant - turnover based payment (December 2021)
($3,000 for employing businesses, $1,000 for non-employing businesses, additional $1,000 if in CBD, additional $7,000 if turnover above $2 million + additional top up equivalent to above automatic payment if not received):
Businesses that are required to operate under the 1 person per 7 square metre density restriction are able to apply for this grant.
To be eligible for this grant, the turnover for the business for the 2 weeks from 27 December 2021 to 9 January 2022 must have declined by at least 30% compared to 27 December 2019 to 9 January 2020. Supporting information needs to be kept by the business but does not need to be supplied with the application.
Business hardship grant (December 2021)
($6,000 for employing businesses, $2,000 for non-employing businesses, additional $2,000 if in CBD):
This grant is available to businesses who are not eligible for the tourism, hospitality and gym grants (i.e. not subject to the 1 person per 7 square metre density restriction). This grant is available to every business industry.
To be eligible for this grant, the turnover for the business for the 2 weeks from 27 December 2021 to 9 January 2022 must have declined by at least 50% compared to 27 December 2019 to 9 January 2020.
Businesses who have received the Tourism, hospitality & gym grant - automatic payment, Tourism, hospitality & gym grant - turnover based payment, or the Major Events Support Grant, are not eligible to receive a Business Hardship Grant.
Major events grant (December 2021)
(Up to $25,000 for operators of eligible events with expected attendance of more than 1,000, Up to $100,000 for larger events with expended attendance of more than 10,000):
Businesses will be eligible for this grant if they are the organiser/operator of an event scheduled over the period 27 December 2021 to 27 January 2022 which was required to be cancelled or postponed as a result of the COVID-19 health and trading restrictions (on 27 December 2021).
The event must have been a one-off event with an SA Health approved COVID management plan or COVID-safe Plan catering for an event of over 1,000 capacity.
The business must have incurred a non-recoverable financial loss (i.e. no insurance or refunds) as a result of the event being cancelled or postponed. The value of this loss must be declared but supporting information does not need to be provided in the application (however supporting documentation must be retained).
Applications are not yet open | Guidelines
For businesses that did not trade in 2019/20, the comparison period will be 27 December 2020 to 9 January 2021 (unless it did not commence trading until after December 2020).
For businesses that commenced trading after December 2020, the comparison period will be the average fortnightly trading activity between when the business commenced and 30 November 2021 (the cut-off date for commencement).
