From the 1st of November, Australian company directors are required by law to verify their identity with the Australian Business Registry and obtain a Director ID.
If you are a director, please continue reading for more information regarding how to obtain your Director ID and when you need it by.
Please note, if we are your ASIC registered agent (you receive your annual reviews via our office) then you need to provide us with your Director ID. Please send it to us via email.
A Director ID is a 15-digit unique identifier that a director will apply for once and keep forever. This is intended to help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities. Director IDs will mean that regulators have a snapshot of a director's corporate history, including a summary of any company with which a director has been involved. When you need to apply for a Director ID depends on when you were appointed as a Director.
If you are an existing director, you have until the 30 November 2022 to apply for your Director ID.
Directors appointed between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 must apply for a Director ID within 28 days of their appointment.
From 5 April 2022, intending directors must apply before being appointed.
There are civil and criminal penalties for non-compliance, which are governed by ASIC.
Directors must personally apply for their Director ID via myGovID (an app). You must verify your identity in the myGovID app before you can apply for your Director ID. We cannot apply on your behalf. Linked below are the steps to apply for your Director ID:
